MAHA SHIVARATRI

Namah Shivaya shantaya brahamane lingamurtaye ||

“I bow before the auspicious Lord Shiva, an embodiment of Supreme peace, whose form is divinely effulgent, whose eyes are but pure knowledge, who is the Supreme Being in the form of a ‘Shivling’ (an oval shaped idol of Shiva).”

In the ‘Brahmottar Khand’ of the ‘Skanda Purana’, describing the significance of observing a fast and jagran on Shivratri, Sutaji expounded to the Rishis,

“It is a rare opportunity to observe a fast on the fourteenth moon day of the dark half of the month of Magha (Hindi month Phalguna). I feel it is still rare for human beings to keep awake on the night of Shivratri. The darshan of a Shivling and worship of Lord Shiva on this day, I believe, is even rarer.''

One gains an opportunity to worship Lord Shiva with ‘bilva patra’ (Sacred leaves used for worship of Lord Shiva) only when the punyas (Merits) of a billion lives fructify. The same punyas one earns through bathing in the Ganges for ten thousand years as are earned by worshipping Lord Shiva with ‘bilva patra’ for just once. The punyas that have gradually vanished from the world in every following age are fully present in the fourteenth moon day of the dark half of the month of Magha i.e., on the day of Shivratri. Lord Brahma and other Gods as well as Munis like Vashishtha wholeheartedly praise this day of chaturdashi.

If one observes a fast on this extolled day of Shivratri, one acquires even more punyas than those earned by performing 100 yajnas (Sacrifice, an ancient Hindu institution of religious sacrifice and oblation). ''Who in the three worlds can verily match the punya of a person who has worshipped the Shivling with just one bilva patra?’

Shri Shiva Gita

It is the heart of Skanada Purana in form of a dialogue between Lord Shiva and goddess Parvati. The direct experience of Suta is brilliantly expressed through each and every couplet in it.The couplets of this Guru Gita is the great remedy for the longlasting disease of birth and death. It is the sweetest nectar for Sadhakas. The merit is diminished by drinking the nectar of heaven. By drinking the nectar of this Gita sin is destroyed which leads to Absolute Peace and Knowledge of one's real nature.

Shiva Mahimna Stotram

The Shiva Mahimna Stotra is very popular among the devotees of Lord Shiva and is considered one of the best among all Stotras (or Stutis) offered to Lord Shiva . The recital of this stotra is very beneficial, and Shri Ramakrishna Paramhansa went into samadhi just by reciting a few verses from this hymn." Pujya Bapuji relates the legend about the circumstances leading to the composition of this Stotra, as follows:

"A king named Chitraratha had constructed a nice garden. There were beautiful flowers in this garden. These flowers were used every day by the king in worshipping Lord Shiva.

One day a Gandharva (Singer in the court of Indra, the Lord of the Heaven) named Pushhpadanta being fascinated by the beautiful flowers, began to steal them, as a consequence of which king Chitraratha could not offer flowers to Lord Shiva. He tried very hard to capture the thief, but in vain, because the Gandharvas have divine power to remain invisible.

Finally the king spread the Shiva Nirmaalya in his garden. Shiva Nirmaalya consists of the Bilva leaves, flowers, etc. which have been used in worshipping Lord Shiva. The Shiva Nirmaalya is considered holy. The thief Pushhpadanta, not knowing this, walked on the Shiva Nirmaalya, and by that he incurred the wrath of Lord Shiva and lost the divine power of invisibility. He then designed a prayer to Lord Shiva for forgiveness.

In this prayer he sung the greatness of the Lord.

This very prayer became well known as the `Shiva Mahimna Stotra'. Lord Shiva became pleased by this StotraM, and returned Pushhpadanta's divine powers."

Let its recitation be beneficial to you as well!
